श्री विठ्ठल महात्म्य
The parabrahma or the God of Pandharpur is worshipped and lovingly called by his devotees with many names: Pandharinath, Pandurang, Pandhariraya, Vithai, Vithoba, Vithumauli, Vitthal Gururao, Hari. However, today this God is well-known as Pandurang and Shri Vitthal.
Saint Tukaram defines Vithoba in his abhangas: "Vi stands for Knowledge, Thoba stands for form — thus Vithoba is the form of ultimate Knowledge." It is also believed that Vi = bird Eagle, Thoba = sitting place, thus Vithoba is "God who sits on Eagle."
"वि करो विधातय, थ करो नीलकंठाय,
ल करो लक्ष्मीकंत, विठ्ठलाभिधिनीयमे"
Vi-Vidhata (Brahma), Tha-Neelakantha (Shiva), La-Lakshmikanta (Vishnu) — thus all three deities are signified by one name Vitthal.
Vitthal is benevolent for the downtrodden and is bhaktakamkalpadrum (wish-fulfilling tree for devotees). The sculpture is self-made of sandstone.
King Muchkunda (rebirth as Bhakt Pundalik) was granted a boon by Shri Krishna. When Shri Krishna came to meet Pundalik who was serving his aged parents, Pundalik simply threw a brick for the Lord to stand on. "That brick was Indra, cursed by Vritasur. The Lord has been standing there for 28 Yugas waiting for His true devotees."
In Dwapar era, King Muchkunda helped Gods defeat demons. He requested long sleep and the power to burn anyone who disturbed him. Shri Krishna later used this to defeat demon Kalyauvan by hiding in the cave where Muchkund slept.
After granting the boon, Krishna appeared before Muchkunda who then took rebirth as Pundalik in Pandharpur. Rukmini, disappointed seeing Krishna with Radhika, came to Dindir Van and started meditating. Krishna followed her there.
Pundalik was on Kashi pilgrimage with his wife when he met seer Kukkut. Impressed by Kukkut's devotion to parents, Pundalik returned to serve his own parents. Krishna, moved by this devotion, came to meet him but Pundalik was busy serving his parents...
Rukmini, one of the eight wives of Shri Krishna, came to Dindir Van near Pandharpur after being disappointed. She started deep meditation (tapahshcharya) there. Shri Krishna came searching for her and found her in Pandharpur.
The temple houses both Shri Vitthal and Devi Rukmini in their divine forms. Devotees (Varkari) never leave Pandharpur on Wednesday, the day of Vithoba.
